Experimental Quantum Condensed Matter Physics
The University of Maryland Department of Physics invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor in Experimental Quantum Condensed Matter Physics. The Maryland Quantum Materials Center (QMC) supports cutting-edge experimental research in physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering; the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) researchers work at the intersection of quantum information, AMO physics, and CM physics. Including a diverse range of faculty, research scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, researchers tackle topics ranging from the search for new quantum materials to the design of electronic devices that employ new physical principles. We seek candidates with exceptional promise of major future achievements who will lead innovative research efforts in fields broadly aligned with or complementing our existing strengths and interests, including candidates with expertise in quantum materials synthesis and exploration, measurement and characterization techniques, and new quantum-based devices. Outstanding candidates in all fields of experimental quantum condensed matter physics will be considered, including senior level positions.
The University of Maryland’s physics department is nationally ranked, with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. UMD is conveniently located inside the national capital beltway, and is near the NIST Center for Neutron Research in Gaithersburg as well as several federal funding agency headquarters and DOD research laboratories. QMC has a close relationship with JQI, several other academic departments, and quantum science and information centers on campus (see https://quantum.umd.edu).
Minimum requirements: A Ph.D. in condensed matter physics or related discipline. Good teaching, particularly in settings with diverse groups, is a high priority of the Department, and a potential for teaching excellence is necessary. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, have good communication skills, and have the potential for leadership within the research community.
The University of Maryland and Department of Physics are committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community. Candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students, and who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity are encouraged to identify their experience in these areas.
Only applications submitted through the UMD online site will be considered: https://ejobs.umd.edu/postings/114417
Required are (1) a cover letter, (2) a CV, (3) a statement of research interests and plans, (4) a statement of teaching philosophy and (5) the names and email addresses of at least four references. The preferred starting date for the position is August of 2024.
For best consideration, applications should be received by December 1, 2023, but the position is open until filled.
