Position description

The Quantum Nanoelectronics Laboratory (QNL) at UC Berkeley conducts cutting-edge research on superconducting devices, including for use in quantum computation and other applications. QNL is seeking a postdoc working in the area of nanofabrication to support work to improve the performance of multiqubit, multilayer superconducting qubit circuits through the development and optimization of the fabrication process.

Duties of the position:

• Fabrication process development and optimization to improve the performance of superconducting devices
• Independently and collaboratively design and perform experiments
• Device characterization, including room-temperature and cryogenic measurements at both DC and microwave frequencies.
• Material characterizations and material quality improvement
• Simulation of quantum circuits to optimize the design of multiqubit chips.
• Present and publish experiment results in internal and external meetings and journals.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• PhD (or equivalent international degree).
• No more than three years of post-degree research experience.

Preferred qualifications

• Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Three (3) years of working experience in cleanroom/ nanofabrication processes.
• Hands-on experience with nanofabrication tools and skills, including, but not limited to, photo/ebeam lithography, dry/wet etching, thin-film deposition, packaging, metrology and mask layout design (.gds, .dxf, etc.).
• Knowledge of quantum information science related to one or more of the responsibilities/research areas listed.
• Experience using Python based programming tools.
• Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and verbal presentation of scientific results.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
• Ability to mentor and direct the work of students.
• Willingness to occasional traveling to sponsor’s site and conferences.
• Experience in quantum information science related fields, especially in superconducting qubits.
• Extensive experience in physical vapor deposition such as MBE and the relevant characterization tools.
• Experience in microwave device simulation and design.
