Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics – One-Year Appointment 2025-2026

The Department of Physics at Gettysburg College invites applications for a one-year position as Visiting Assistant Professor in physics beginning August 2025. Our preference is for individuals who have engaged in research-supported pedagogy centered around student learning and who foster active and inclusive learning environments. Given the Physics Department’s mission to promote positive change in physics, our search is grounded in our commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The teaching load for this position will be the equivalent of three courses each semester. Opportunities exist to teach at the introductory levels (all courses) and upper levels (including electronics, upper-level mechanics, and quantum mechanics). Candidates will have the opportunity to participate with students in the X-SIG Summer Research Program, a unique summer research program and science community.

Qualifications: Candidates will have earned a doctorate by August 2025 in physics, astronomy, or a closely allied field. We strongly encourage applications from candidates who are committed to and can speak to mentoring and educating a broad range of students but particularly those who are traditionally underrepresented in physics and astronomy. Teaching experience or promise of excellence in teaching is desirable. Evidence of active scholarship is valued but not required.

Application Details: Please visit our website to submit your electronic application: https://gettysburg.peopleadmin.com/postings/5669 . Application materials should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and current email addresses for at least three professional references (at least one of which can speak to your teaching ability). Please limit the teaching statement to 3 pages. The teaching statement must address experience and/or knowledge regarding issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom. Professional references will be contacted by Gettysburg College to submit letters of recommendation electronically. Applications and letters of recommendation received by February 7, 2024 will be given fullest consideration, but submissions will continue to be accepted and reviewed until the position is filled. Inquiries can be addressed to the Chair of the Physics Department, Dr. Kurt Andresen, at kandrese@gettysburg.edu.
